Update: Apple Watch Activity app workaround for ‘rest days’ concept

Earlier this month I wrote about a sour experience I had with my Apple Watch and activity tracking. Apple’s Activity app on the iPhone recorded 499 active calories burned, just one active calorie shy of my daily goal, even though the Activity app on my Apple Watch showed my progress at just over 100%.

It was an odd (and annoying) discrepancy that prompted me to think about how Apple’s Activity app could better handle different situations like sick days and harder to track activities. I proposed a new concept of rest days, tolerance levels, and an honor system that could help avoid losing achievement streaks and motivation.

A lot of readers wrote in with similar stories and advice for correcting the data sync bug that I experienced. Now that we’re on the last day of the month (happy Halloween!), I can report that the recommendation I received from 9to5Mac readers was successful and worth passing along.

As we await Apple’s AirPods, these are the best wireless cord-free earbuds available

Apple delayed the release of its new truly wireless earbuds called AirPods that it originally planned on launching in late October. It’s disappointing for some who wanted to use them with their new iPhone 7 that launched back in September. But what does the competition look like?

With the AirPods originally expected to launch sometime this month, right around the time of Apple’s MacBook Pro event and Apple Watch Nike+ launch last week, a lot of accessory makers have been planning launches to time and compete with Apple’s new wireless earbuds. Just this week a few new products launched, including Michigan-based Sol Republic’s first cord-free product called ‘Amps Air’, and today Best Buy is launching new $249 Skybuds that claim to offer 24 hours battery with an included charging case and improved connectivity.

If you just can’t wait for the AirPods, or want to check out the competition and see how Apple’s earbuds compare, these are the alternatives…

Comment: Apple’s new ‘TV’ app and why that once-rumored streaming service should exist

At its Mac event last week, Apple previewed a new app called ‘TV’ that’s coming in December to the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV (and apparently not the Mac). The TV app is Apple’s effort to unify the video watching experience that currently takes place across various (mostly paid) video apps.

The videos are still served up in each channel’s app, but Apple’s new TV app is home base for discovering what to watch next or resuming something you’ve already started. It’s less about providing actually new content and more about improving how you find content that you can already watch in other ways.

And unless you pay for cable, you’ll probably find the TV app to be somewhat limited when it launches. Potential Netflix integration could help, but an Apple-produced subscription TV service would unlock the full potential of the new TV app and the Apple TV…

MacBook Pro Diary: My take on some of the criticisms being levelled at the new models

The new MacBook Pro models have been coming under a fair amount of criticism on the Internet. Many are saying that the new machines just aren’t wowing them, especially just after Microsoft demonstrated that it is still possible to do so even in the boring old desktop PC market with the new Surface Studio.

That criticism is absolutely fair enough, and echoes my own views when I said that I was buying it despite not being excited by it.

But some criticisms being directed at the machines seem to me to be misplaced …

Apple releases iOS 10.1.1 for iPhone and iPad, fixes bug with missing Health data

Apple has released iOS 10.1.1 for iPhones and iPad, less than a week since the iOS 10.1 update which included iPhone 7 Portrait Mode. The bug fixes a specific issue with the Health app, where data was not showing for some users. There may also be improvements to other niggling issues, which are alluded to (“bugs”, plural) but only the Health fix is explicitly referenced in the release notes.

Latest Apple Campus 2 drone videos show outer facade almost complete, new landscaping & more

Two new drone videos are up, showing the latest progress on the Apple Campus 2 construction. The outer facade of the main building is now almost complete, along with around half the solar panels on the roof, with far fewer cranes now operating. The team has also been busy on the landscaping front, with lots of new trees throughout the site.

The maintenance facility is growing, construction of a new security building is underway on the Tantau Avenue side of the campus and the main parking garages look pretty much complete – with 300 charging stations for all those Teslas Apple employees favor
